Great news about
B Sharp's re-opening! Tallahassee needs that venue. Speaking
of Jazz, Downbeat Magazine in its February 2012, edition named
the BBC as one of the World's Top Jazz Venues for 2012. Well,
Downbeat promotes itself as "Jazz, Blues & Beyond"
so I guess the BBC fits the bill. Brandon
Santini and James
Armstrong put on stellar shows to a full house last
weekend. The vibe that a packed house and an inspired band produce
is amazing. Happens so often out here. What a magical place
the BBC is.
Kim and I are heading
to Memphis for the week for the International Blues Challenge.
223 acts from 16 countries including the Philippines, South
Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Scandinavia, the Baltics, Croatia
and Australia. After judging two quarter final rounds, we'll
spend Friday and Saturday catching other competitions and head
down to Clarksdale, MS, to catch some blues from the Delta.
Sometimes Mohammad must go to the mountain.
While we are gone,
BBC irregulars Paula, Rachel and Kris will be running the shows
with JB's ZydecoZoo and Harper.
JB's
ZydecoZoo lets loose another Zydeco throwdown on
Friday, Feb. 3. Dancin' shoes, parasols, masks,
hankies and beads are strongly suggested. A long time Tallahassee
favorite, the Zoo packs the club and the dance floor every time
they take the corner stage. The Zoo includes the Zoo Keeper
JB (John Babich) squeezin' the box, Missippy James bendin' the
strings, Jiggs Walker providin' the bottom, Commander Keith
McCraw
rackin' it up on the rubboard with brother Larry McCraw ticklin'
the triangle and young AJ on percussion. It doesn't get much
more fun than this! Folks should stake out their place on the
dance floor (and club) early 'cause it fills up quickly. The
Tallahassee Democrat's musical muse, Kati Schardl, calls their
music "ridiculously danceable"and that ain't no lie!
Come on out and bring your partner or find one on the dance
floor! We'll provide the dancin' juice and bonfire. More info
on the band at: http://www.zydecozoo.com
with music at: http://www.myspace.com/jbszydecozoo
The festivities start at 9:30 pm. The cover is only $10, and
$8 for Tallahassee Zydeco and Cajun Association members and
students.Sorry, no advance sales or reservations for this show.
Seating will be first come, first served as Kim and Gary will
be in Memphis this week. Doors open at 8:30!
On
Saturday, February 4, its Didgeriblues when Blind Pig
recording artist and Australian blues, soul and world music
master Harper
& Midwest Kind returns to Tallahassee's outback
for a night of unique blues and world music. Harper's music
reflects the earthy, worldly influences from Down Under. He
is a singer and songwriter, plays a mean blues harp and incorporates
the Aboriginal Didgeridoo into his shows. His music is hard
to classify but it's an eclectic mix of blues, soul, rock, funk
and world roots vibes. Harper's vocals are powerful, passionate
and gritty. His harp playing is electric—from fast and
furious to slow and moving. As reviewers have noted:
"Imagine
a singer with the deep soul of Motown, a harmonica player who
can graft Sonny Boy II and Little Walter with Sugar Blue, a
song writer who tells his own compelling stories in an unhurried,
J.J Cale -like manner, and a musical visionary who is unafraid
to mix the didgeridoo, an important part of the Australian Indigenous
culture of his homeland, with infectious modern percussive rhythms,
and you have a glimpse of
what Harper is about".
Art Tipaldi, Hartford Advocate, Connecticut . USA
"The man can
blow a harp like no body's business; and did I mention he has
created some of the most soulful, most blues-rock filled music
I have heard in quite some time? However, this is just skimming
the surface of what this phenomenal artist emits from this 12
song CD consisting of his Michigan-based touring band, Midwest
Kind. Harper enlists the sounds of blues, rock, R & B, and
adds a strong element of world music, as evidenced by the use
of the aboriginal musical instrument didgeridoo. In fact, Mr.
Harper himself plays this incredibly recognizable musical instrument
commonly played by the native peoples of the "Outback".
Rebel Rod Ames, "No Depression Ezine", USA May, 2010
.
Harper
is backed up by Midwest Kind, a tight and the most talented
unit he has assembled. Harper's stage setting creates the mood
for a night of moving music--colorful sights and aromatic fragrances.
